Hysterectomy options are variable. Hysterectomy is the most commonly performed operation in this country. Approaches include abdominal hysterectomy either through and abdominal incision vertically from the belly button to the top of the pubic bone, an abdominal incision across the lower abdomen like a cesarean section incision or “bikini cut”, vaginally with incisions only on the inside of the vagina, or laporoscopically with small “band aid” incisions at the belly button and on either side of the abdomen with or without a vagina incision. Remember, a hysterectomy implies only removal of the uterus. If the ovaries and tubes are also removed, that is described separately. Patients are extensively counseled preoperatively if the ovaries and tubes are to be removed at the time of hysterectomy.
